Nothing can do more for a story than a first strong line. It sets up the success of the story or sometimes it can ruin the ending. 

Same goes for the last lines. Have you ever been listening to a story and the storyteller stops speaking and you think, “Is that it? Is there more?” An awkward silence ensues.
