Everything is a choice, including inaction.
There is no such thing as an innocent bystander. I didn’t do it. I didn’t hit the guy, I just watched those other three guys hit him. I didn’t think he would get seriously injured. I didn’t think.
I defend myself by saying I didn’t do anything. I didn’t step in and stop it. I didn’t call the police. I didn’t look for someone who could help. I didn’t do anything.
And doing nothing, inaction, was a choice. And choice means responsibility.
Pretending that I have no culpability because I didn’t do anything is like closing my eyes and pretending that no one can see me.
I didn’t make that racist comment.
I didn’t lie to her.
I didn’t vote.
I didn’t DO anything.
